Hypnosis is a term that often conjures up images of people being put into a deep sleep or being made to do strange and unusual things. However, hypnosis is actually a natural and normal state of mind that we all experience to some extent in our everyday lives.


What is hypnosis?


Hypnosis is a mental state of heightened suggestibility and relaxation. It's a state of mind where the conscious mind is put to rest, and the subconscious mind becomes more open and receptive to suggestions. During hypnosis, the hypnotherapist uses different techniques to help the subject enter into this trance like state of mind.


Hypnosis can be used for a range of purposes, including smoking cessation, weight loss, stress reduction, anxiety relief, and pain management. It can also be used to help with various phobias, such as fear of flying or fear of public speaking.


How does hypnosis work?


The exact workings of hypnosis are not yet fully understood, but there are several theories as to how it works. One theory suggests that hypnosis works by altering the subject's perception of reality. In this trance like state of mind, the subject may become more open to suggestions and may be more willing to try new things or see things from a different perspective.


Another theory suggests that hypnosis changes the way the brain processes and responds to incoming stimuli. During hypnosis, the brain may become more focused more open and more receptive to new information. This can help the subject to make positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.


What happens during a hypnosis session?


During a hypnosis session, the subject is usually asked to sit or lie down in a comfortable position. The hypnotherapist will then use various techniques to help the subject enter into a state of relaxation and suggestibility. These techniques may include guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, or soothing words and phrases, so the client just let’s go and relaxes.


Once the subject is in a state of hypnosis, the hypnotherapist may then make positive suggestions to help the subject achieve their goals. For example, if the subject wants to quit smoking, the hypnotist may suggest that cigarettes no longer hold any appeal for them or that they feel confident and in control without smoking.


It's worth noting that hypnosis is not a form of mind control, and the subject always retains control over their own thoughts and actions. The subject cannot be made to do anything against their will while in a state of hypnosis.


Who can be hypnotised?


Not everyone is able to be hypnotised, and the degree of suggestibility can vary from person to person. However, most people can be hypnotised to some extent with the right techniques and approach. Those who are more suggestible tend to be those who are able to focus deeply and have good imaginations.
